Greek coast guard have rescued 242 migrants from six unseaworthy vessels south of Crete in a single afternoon alone, highlighting an aggressive surge in human smuggling operations launching from eastern Libya. The Hellenic Coast Guard intercepted the coordinated flotilla across five separate operations within a matter of hours on Thursday. Authorities transferred 139 migrants to the port of Kaloi Limenes, 65 to Agia Galini, and 38 to Palaiochora. Official maritime data shows a 50% month-over-month spike in migrant boats successfully landing on Crete and the remote southern islet of Gavdos, pushing cumulative arrivals for the first five months of 2026 up 23% compared to the same period last year.
