Former Athens Mayor Bakoyannis Accuses City Hall of Dismissing Public Anger Over Trash Crisis

Former Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis has accused the current city administration of ignoring residents' complaints over overflowing trash bins, litter-strewn streets and a growing sense of neglect across the Greek capital, in remarks delivered at a city council meeting. "Overflowing bins, garbage in the streets, filth in public spaces, foul odors and a sense of abandonment are not a media narrative," Mr. Bakoyannis said, addressing the current municipal administration. "This is the daily reality for Athenians." Mr. Bakoyannis said the city administration has dismissed public complaints, framing criticism as a coordinated attack against it rather than acknowledging legitimate concerns. He said the administration refused even to hear proposals from opposition councilors at Tuesday's meeting. "The administration believes this offends them, but in reality it insults the very Athenians who live with this situation every day," Mr. Bakoyannis said.
